High School Students Earn College Credit in Summer
BDPA - Bay Area partners
with DeVry University to train high school
students in emerging and traditional technologies. The opening event had outstanding participation with over
forty parents, friends and family members supporting fifteen, eligible
students. This group of students was selected based on strong academic
backgrounds and a history of achievement.
From the Summer Web Design class, two participants are college freshmen. The top performers received entry into the internship program; and
Martin Kimani (now a returning freshman with a 4.0 GPA) is an Oracle
Scholarship recipient. All of the youngsters benefited from the experience and
feel greater confidence in their career plans to enter technical fields of
study.
Everyone is excited about involvement from so many groups and
individuals. This success belongs to the Silicon Valley
nonprofits who participated in a trend-setting communications effort--as well as each concerned
person who acted as part of this viral marketing initiative.
"In the final analysis, each of us has a social responsibility to improve the state where we live. It is great to see people working together to increase the number of teenagers from under-represented communities learning about web design. This is the first step to increasing the ranks of future technologists." according to Patricia Glover, BDPA Bay Area chapter president."
